The Arizona Diamondbacks, seeking to increase their rotation depth, reached agreement Friday with right-hander Brandon McCarthy on a two-year contract, according to major-league sources.

The deal is worth $15.5 million, according to the Arizona Republic.

The deal, however, is pending a physical. And given McCarthy's chronic shoulder trouble, the physical is not a formality.

McCarthy, 29, pitched 111 innings for the Oakland Athletics last season, going 8-6 with a 3.24 ERA.

His addition would give the Diamondbacks more flexibility if they wished to include a starting pitcher in a trade for a shortstop.

The team had discussed left-hander Patrick Corbin and right-hander Trevor Bauer in talks on a multi-team trade that would have brought shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to Arizona.

The signing of McCarthy would not necessarily end the D-backs' quest to upgrade their starting pitching. The team also has been trying to add a top-of-the-rotation starter.
