Former Oakland pitcher Dave Stewart throws out the ceremonial first pitch during a reunion of the 1989 World Series team prior to the baseball game against San Francisco on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in Oakland, Calif.
The 1989 World Series between the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants was supposed to be known as the Battle of the Bay, but instead will be remembered as the Earthquake Series. The Loma Prieta earthquake ripped through San Francisco's Candlestick Park during game 3 of the series, halting play for 10 full days. The earthquake wasn't the only disaster in the series however. The Giants horrendous play - they never led or even had the tying run at the plate in the last inning - brought about a sweep at the hands of an A's squad that featured Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, and series MVP Dave Stewart.
