Showjumper Lamaze has had a rocky road to Olympic glory.
He was scheduled to feature at the Games in Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000, but was suspended before both events for separate incidents of testing positive for drugs.
After having his lifetime ban overturned, Lamaze steadily rebuilt his career and following decent performances at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio, he entered the 2008 Olympics with his horse Hickstead.
Lamaze took silver with Canada in the team jumping event in Beijing, but went one better to win an individual jumping gold medal, beating Sweden's Rolf-Goran Bengtsson and his horse Ninja in a jump-off for the title.
Lamaze teamed up with his trusted stallion to finish second at the 2011 FEI World Cup Jumping Final in Leipzig, but in November 2011 tragedy struck when Hickstead collapsed during a competition in Verona and died of an aortic rupture.
