Six days after losing out in a sprint finish to big rival Tatyana Samolenko of the Soviet Union in the 3000 metres final, Paula Ivan made history at the Seoul 1988 Games.

The Romanian bounced back from her silver medal to win a superb gold in the 1500m.

Ivan left the reigning world champion over the distance, Samolenko, to battle it out for the lesser medals as she set a new Olympic record of 3 minutes, 53.96 seconds in South Korea.

Her winning margin of almost seven seconds was the biggest-ever at the Olympic Games and has not been beaten since.
