How much: $717,000

Many athletes buy cars with their millions, but Jack Clark took the pastime to another level. Amid his high-profile bankruptcy in 1992, Sports Illustrated documented the former San Francisco Giant's dangerous infatuation with buying wheels in an article titled, "The 18-Car Barrage." In the piece, the magazine detailed each of the pricey vehicles that led to the financial downfall of Clark - a list that includes three $100,000-plus Mercedes, an $80,000 1955 Ford Thunderbird and two Ferraris. One of those Ferraris, a 1990 F-40, had a price tag of $717,000. Adjusted for inflation, that vehicle would cost nearly $1.2 million today.
