Real Madrid, Manchester United battle to draw: Champions League

Real Madrid, Manchester United battle to draw: Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo scored with a spectacular header Wednesday as Real Madrid was held to a 1-1 home draw by Manchester United in the last 16 of the Champions League due to a dominant performance by visiting goalkeeper David de Gea.

After Danny Welbeck gave United the lead against the run of play with a header from a 20th-minute corner, Ronaldo rose high to meet Angel di Maria's swinging cross 10 minutes later for his 183rd goal for Madrid — and first against his former club.

Ronaldo's goal in the first leg at Santiago Bernabeu stadium allowed him to eclipse Francisco "Paco" Gento to become Madrid's sixth most prolific scorer.

"We began very strong and suddenly they scored and the match took on another form for us," Madrid coach Jose Mourinho said.

The result means Madrid is now unbeaten in 34 consecutive home matches (27 wins, seven draws) since a Copa del Rey loss to Barcelona on Jan. 18, 2012.

De Gea made several impressive saves, including a fingertip effort onto the post to deny Fabio Coentrao in the first half as well as holding a firmly struck bouncing shot from Sami Khedira after the break.

"Fortunately, David De Gea made some very good saves. He's been improving all season and he made an absolutely superb save there," United manager Alex Ferguson said of his oft-maligned goalkeeper's stop on Coentrao's attempt.

"The first half I was a bit disappointed by how deep we defended and gave Real a lot of opportunities for crosses and shots."

The match had been built up as Mourinho against Ferguson and Ronaldo versus Robin van Persie, but the United striker failed to take advantage of several good opportunities. He struck the crossbar with a fierce right-footed strike and forced a save with a low drive late on, however a mishit volley that was cut out by Xabi Alonso as it neared the goal line proved to be his most glaring miss.

By contrast, Ronaldo was a constant menace without ever really threatening to cut loose. He sent several shots passed De Gea's posts and even landed a 35-meter free kick on the top of the goalkeeper's net.

"Manchester is a very strong team defensively and they created a few problems for us," Ronaldo said. "But we really needed to have scored one or two more goals."

The last time these two teams met at the Bernabeu was in 2003 when Madrid emerged 3-1 winners. But it has been 11 years since Madrid played a knockout Champions League match without goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who was out because of a broken hand and replaced by Diego Lopez.

Mourinho also chose 19-year-old French centre back Raphael Varane following his great performance against Barcelona in which he almost single-handedly rescued Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals that ended in a 1-1 draw.

First-choice centre back Pepe was on the bench as has been recovering from surgery on his right ankle in early January. He came on late Saturday to take part in Madrid's 4-1 trouncing of Sevilla, a match in which midfielders Mesut Oezil, Alonso and Khedira were rested in anticipation of United's visit.

Ferguson opted to start Jonny Evans alongside Rio Ferdinand in defence with club captain Nemanja Vidic failing to even earn a place on the bench due to his recent lengthy layoff. Shinji Kagawa was also promoted but proved ineffectual against Madrid's bustling midfield and was replaced in the second half.

United's European campaigns in the previous two seasons have been ended by Spanish sides, going out in the Europa League to Althletic Bilbao last year and losing the Champions League final to Barcelona in 2011.

Madrid started the match looking sharp, with Khedira shooting wide from a second-minute pass by Ronaldo in his team's first attack. Two minutes later, Di Maria also shot wide and Coentrao sent the ball across De Gea's goalmouth after a probing run from left back.

United's defence looked more solid after the break, allowing the team to counter with Van Persie making a searching run that was only ended in the box by Varane's timely intercepting tackle.

Gonzalo Higuain came on for the anonymous Karim Benzema in the 60th, and a minute later De Gea stretched athletically to save with his right foot after Coentrao, sliding forward, connected with Khedira's pass.

The 39-year-old Ryan Giggs came on for Kagawa, making his 133rd appearance in the Champions League and steadying United by sitting deep to help soak up the pressure ahead of the second leg on March 5.

"They came here to defend well," Mourinho said. "They came here to not concede spaces and goals, and they did not play to win. But they know they have in attack very important players with great potential that out of nothing can create chances and score goals."

Borussia Dortmund comes back to draw Shakhtar Donetsk

Borussia Dortmund twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Shakhtar Donetsk in the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday following Mats Hummels' late equalizer.

Hummels' powerful header from Marcel Schmelzer's corner in the 87th minute ensures the defending Bundesliga champions will have the advantage of two away goals in the second leg at home on March 5.

Shakhtar captain Darijo Srna struck first with a free kick in the 31st, the ball sailing over the wall and rendering goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller a bystander as it flew into the net.

Ten minutes later, Dortmund finally converted one of its many chances when Robert Lewandowski found the near corner from just outside the box after having missed his first attempt on goal.

Shakhtar regained the lead when substitute Douglas Costa brought down a long-range pass while between two defenders and 35 metres out from goal to find the net with a shot on the turn in the 69th.

Led by midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski, Dortmund had several attempts on goal in the opening 20 minutes but Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov's first real test came from a corner in the 17th minute. Hummels rose above Luiz Adriano to head Marco Reus' cross onto the crossbar with Pyatov no chance of intervening.

Shakhtar began to enjoy a period of possession from the 30th minute onwards with new acquisition Taison the only player looking a danger for the hosts up until to that point.

Shakhtar's defence was bolstered by Fernandinho providing an effective barrier in front of the back four, with the Brazilian being largely responsible for the visitors only converting two of their 17 overall chances.

In the second half, both sides seemed intent on keeping the ball rather than throwing men forward as the game's tempo began to subside.

Despite being mostly in control, Dortmund continued to miss chance and chance before Hummels popped up late to give the German team a deserved point.

The match began with a minute's silence to remember the four people who died earlier Wednesday on a Donetsk-bound plane from the port city of Odesa. Two others were injured while the fate of two others is unknown, according to Ukrainian officials. The passengers were travelling to attend the match.

Real Madrid was held to a 1-1 home draw by Manchester United at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in the other last-16 match on Wednesday. Danny Welbeck gave United a 20th-minute lead with a header from a corner, but Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 183rd goal for Madrid with a high-flying leap and precise header into the net.
